Details
UpdateEXPERT.exe
Also known as the "UpdateEXPERT Console" or just "console", this is the user interface (GUI). This program interacts primarily with the "installation" and "console" database files. The "installation" database file is in the "program files\common files" directory because it is shared with UEAgent.exe, while the "console" database is in the product installation directory.
UEAgent.exe
This process plays the role of both Master Agent and Leaf Agent. Its primary mission is messaging with other UEAgents (in the Leaf role), and messaging with UELog, UEFile, and UEActor.
This program interacts primarily with the "installation" and "actor" database files. The "installation" database file is in the "program files\common files" directory because it is shared with UpdateEXPERT.exe, while the "actor" database is in the %systemroot%\UEAgent directory.
Tip: UEAgent, UELog, UEFile and UEActor all start and stop together.
UELog.exe
Writes log file data to C:\Program Files\Common Files\UpdateEXPERT\ActorUserLog.txt
UEFile.exe
Does file related tasks.
UEActor.exe
Interacts with remediation database.
UEAgentInstaller.exe
This is effectively the Agent Installation Wizard, which can be launched from several places in the UpdateEXPERT interface. This program allows a local or remote agent installation to a machine.
UEInstallService.exe
Runs Microsoft updates on all targets, forwards update status to UpdateEXPERT Console for display in the deployment status window.
In "task manager" or "services" window on a target, you will typically see "UEInstallService.exe" displayed. In task manager, you will see "update.exe" or "ieupdate.exe" or some other update program consuming CPU time ... this means the patches are being applied. Note that update.exe or ieupdate.exe are Microsoft programs, not part of UpdateEXPERT.
UEInstallService also reboots target using "Smart Reboot Elimination" feature of UpdateEXPERT.
Typically, you'll find a copy of this process in C:\%WinDiR%\ue_installs, possibly with some patches that are installing if you view a target during patch installation.
UpdateUE.exe
This requests remediation database updates from St. Bernard Software, downloads them, and applies them to UpdateEXPERT automatically. Frequency is controlled by user-specified "Update Database" scheduling.
AgentUtil.exe
Added in 6.1 to support migration of Master-Agent data (Agent Settings and Leaf Agent data) from one machine to another. You exit the console and run AgentUtil locally on the existing system to "backup" data to a file, take the file over to the new machine, install the Master Agent, and run AgentUtil.exe locally again to "restore" the data. Prior "Agent Settings" and previously known Leaf Agents will show up. This process is found in C:\%WinDir%\UEAgent.
Note: This process does NOT accept command line arguments. Its a simple GUI provided for an occasional need.
PUP.exe
Added in 6.1 to support the "packaged updates" feature. This allows UpdateEXPERT and its remediation database to be updated in an isolated (non-internet connected) network.
Note: PUP updates UpdateEXPERT only. Customer must download and move needed patches into the isolated network. Contact UpdateEXPERT Technical Support for licensing requirements and "Packaged Updates" documentation.
